In what we hope was the first of many on-campus literary evenings, The Common joined Circus, Amherst’s student-run literary magazine, for special Family Weekend readings in the Mead Art Museum. Visiting Writer Amity Gaige, acclaimed author of The Folded World and O My Darling, read from a recently published short story. Amherst creative writing students then stepped up to the podium to share original poetry and fiction before an enthusiastic crowd of family, faculty, and friends. Afterwards, we convened over snacks and drinks in the museum’s history-rich Rotherwas Room, a wood-paneled space built in the seventeenth century for an English knight and previously host to literary lights such as Robert Frost. View pictures of this inaugural event below and on our Facebook page. More joint ventures that engage student literary life are in the works.

The Printer’s Ball
We get excited about print. A card, a poster, an ad, an invitation, a broadside, a lit mag. You can take a printed thing home with you, shelve it, hang it on a wall, stuff it in a pocket and–and this is the best part–rediscover it later.
CLMP Weekend in NYC
The Common just returned from CLMP’s 11th Annual Lit Mag Marathon Weekend in New York City! You can see pictures from the event below, and lots more on our Facebook page (The Common on Facebook). On Saturday, we attended a literary magazine reading at the beautiful New York Public Library. On Sunday, we displayed our magazine at a fair to benefit Housing Works at their bookstore in Soho. Read Issue 00 here on our website.
Going Public
On Memorial Day Weekend The Common went public. A literary IPO. Our first offering featured Issue 00 contributor Ted Conover who read from his new bookThe Routes of Man and talked to a packed house about his unique on-the-ground journalism.
