Alex Averbuch authored Talks with the Besieged on the basis of his engagement with group chats on Telegram and other public IM platforms by Ukrainian civilians in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. The present selection is excerpted from this larger work that explores the relentless and evolving nature of the occupation, capturing the initial bewilderment and disorientation experienced by those who stayed behind. These brief, fragmented exchanges reflect civilians navigating the chaos of war in real time. Oscillating between found poetry, a digital archive, and virtual testimony, the text presents the fears, anxieties, aspirations, and dreams of the community enduring liminality and existential uncertainty. In translating these dispatches, we’ve attempted to approximate the casual, matter-of-fact tone of participants, their poignant attempts to lighten the mood, encourage each other, and offer reassurance and consolation.While Telegram and many other IM platforms offer automatic capitalization for each new comment, we decided to use lowercase letters instead, capitalizing only toponyms and proper names. We have also removed the names of the original contributors, blurring the distinctions between them and obscuring where one utterance ends and another begins. Alex Averbuch is a poet, translator, and scholar. He is the author of four books of poetry, over a hundred publications of his own creative writing, and over sixty selections of literary translations spanning Ukrainian, Hebrew, Russian, and English. His poems have appeared in English translation in Beloit, Manhattan Review, Copper Nickel, Birmingham Poetry Review, Plume, Words Without Borders, Sugar House Review, Constellations, and Common Knowledge, as well as in anthologies in English, Italian, French, Hebrew, Finnish, Estonian, and Polish translation. His works have been twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize. His book Zhydivs’kyi korol’ (The Jewish King) was a finalist for the Shevchenko National Prize, Ukraine’s highest award for culture and literature. Its English translation, by Oksana Maksymchuk and Max Rosochinsky, along with new poems, titled Furious Harvests, is forthcoming from Harvard University Press.
Oksana Maksymchuk is a bilingual Ukrainian-American poet, scholar, and literary translator. Her debut English-language poetry collection Still City was published by University of Pittsburgh Press (US) and Carcanet Press (UK) and has been long-listed for the 2025 Griffin Poetry Prize and the 2025 Pen/Voelcker Award for Poetry. Her poems appeared in The Guardian, The Paris Review, The Poetry Review and many other journals. She had also published two poetry collections, Xenia and Lovy, in the Ukrainian. Oksana holds a PhD in philosophy from Northwestern University.
Max Rosochinsky is a scholar and translator. With Oksana Maksymchuk, he co-edited an anthologyWords for War: New Poems from Ukraine, and co-translated several poetry collections, including Lyuba Yakimchuk’s Apricots of Donbas and Marianna Kiyanovska’s The Voices of Babyn Yar. They are recipients of a National Endowments for the Arts Translation Fellowship, the Scaglione Prize for Literary Translation from the Modern Language Association, the American Association for Ukrainian Studies Translation Prize, and other honors. Their work has been supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, Fulbright Scholar Program, National Endowment for the Humanities, and National Endowment for the Arts.
