Juliet McShannon speaks to Emily Everett about her story “Rescue,” which appears in The Common’s spring issue. The story follows a woman on her search for a lost dog through a neighborhood very different from her own, and explores ideas of loss, class, community, and healing. Juliet also discusses how her childhood in Apartheid South Africa, and young adulthood practicing law during the time of transition that followed, has shaped her writing.

Juliet McShannon is an emerging fiction writer who was born in England, raised in South Africa where she practiced law, and now lives in the Colorado Desert in Southern California. She is a graduate of the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers and was selected as a Luso-American Fellow for Disquiet International. Her writing has appeared in Five Points Literary Journal, the New England Review, The Guardian, The Independent, The Star, and elsewhere.

WHAT WE'RE READING
While many lounge into the soft heat of these summer months — leaning back, feet up, a cold drink in one hand — The Common's editorial assistants have been perched on the edge of their seats, hunched over stories large and suspenseful. Check out our reviews, and maybe you'll find a book to add to your summer reading list.

Sharing The Lane

ELANA LAVINE
People who swim at night just want to be left alone. Ladies flapping in flower-molded swim caps. Swim team dropouts, mute and sinewed. Their flip-turns soak the deck, thighs like pistons. The old man whose suit is so translucent I look away, and the yeti who fills both halves of his lane

The Kestrel

ERNESTO PÉREZ ZUÑIGA
I often see it hovering against the wind. Motionless in an impossible point in space until the kestrel insists on tracing its outline. Its own will against the void. A will that dances in a barely perceptible vibration. This is the vertigo of stillness. While its gaze sweeps the ground in search of mice or lizards.
